Persuasive Marketing Tip: The Odd Thing About Even Numbers in Copy
For some reason, odd numbers are more effective than even ones in marketing copy and headlines.
For example, “The 5 energy stocks you must own now” is somehow more appealing than “The 6 energy stocks you must own now” - even though it offers less information.
And you almost never see a book titled “100 Ways to do X.” It’s more likely to be “101 Ways”.
One theory is that the even numbers have more balance and closure, while the odd numbers leave something hanging and are more interesting.
An exception is that the number 10 is very powerful e.g., “10 Tips for Better Writing” - perhaps it seems more authoritative.
According to the psychologist George Miller, the number 7 is particularly significant as it is the maximum number of “bits” of information the average human brain can handle at one time.
So you may find that odd numbers make a bigger impact in your marketing messages.

Success Mindset Tip: 9 Reasons Why People Fail
As if to prove the above point, Napoleon Hill came up with a list of 9 reasons why people fail.
Here’s my favorite 5 from that list. (View all 9):
- Lack of well-defined purpose in life. There is no hope of success for the person who does not have a central purpose or definite goal at which to aim.
- Lack of self-discipline. Before you can control conditions, you must first control yourself. Self-mastery is the hardest job you will ever tackle.
- Procrastination. Most of us go through life as failures, because we are waiting for the “time to be right” to start doing something worthwhile.
- Lack of persistence. Most of us are good “starters” but poor “finishers” of everything we begin.
- Over-caution. The person who takes no chances generally has to take whatever is left when others are through choosing.
