<itunes:summary>In the latest podcast in our Success Mindset series, I share some simple tips and techniques that can help you gain control over your time again.

The more you focus on using your time more effectively, the stronger you will feel - and the stronger you feel, the more in control you will be.
So follow these 7 steps for putting your chaotic life behind you and developing a sense of getting things done.

Step 1: Harness the Power of Calm

Sometimes, it seems like the busier you are, the less time you have to complete everything on your to-do list. That's because your mind tends to race when you've got a lot going on. So to break that habit, try just sitting quietly for a while and releasing troublesome thoughts. Call it 'meditation' and add relaxing music if you want but that's all there is to it.

Step 2: Simplify Your Life

The busier you are, the more it seems as though energy is being drained from your body. But, if you can simplify your life, you'll find your energy and focus gradually returning. The two keys to this are eliminating:

Physical clutter and trash from your surroundings.
Emotional burdens such as unhealthy relationships, unresolved issues, long-held grudges, old limiting beliefs, and much more.

Step 3: Lighten Your Load

Whatever responsibilities are weighing you down and eating up too much time, the easiest way to lighten your load immediately is to ask for help. Most often when you do, other people will be glad to pitch in. They may not realize you need help if you don't say anything!

Step 4: Beat Procrastination

Procrastination can sometimes be just an annoying habit but it can destroy your life if you let it, causing financial difficulties, relationship problems, health crises, and more.

There are many causes for procrastination but here are three common ones:

Believing a task will 'take too long', so you keep putting it off until you have more time.
Believing a task will be too difficult, so you keep putting it off until you feel ready to handle it.
Waiting for a 'better time' to tackle a task, such as waiting until you have less demands on your time.

The best way to deal with all three of these procrastination habits is to do a little each day!

Here's how I resist the procrastination urge...
I'll set a timer for 15 minutes and promise myself that I can stop after that if I want to. Once the 15 minutes are up, however, I no longer feel the need to procrastinate. I'm making progress and feeling good about it.
Step 5: Overcome Confusion
If you've got a million things on your mind and you're trying to remember them all at once, it's easy to feel a rampant sense of confusion. But most of us tend to jump into each task without thinking through everything that needs to be done. To help you keep it all together much more easily, try to plan ahead of time. Just a few minutes of preparation goes a long way toward reducing stress.

Step 6: Preventing Stress
One of the most powerful ways to prevent stress from even getting started is simply to get enough sleep! Experiment to determine your optimal amount of sleep - and then stick to it!

Step 7: The Power of Saying 'No'
Most of us want to help others, whether we're volunteering our time at a charitable organization or being supportive to our friends and family. But sometimes our good intentions can get the best of us. You have every right to help when you can and refuse when you can't! And you don't have to explain why or justify your decision. Surprisingly, most people won't freak out over your refusal. Ultimately, what is more important to you: keeping them happy or keeping your sanity?
Remember, no matter how hard you try, you really can't 'manage time'. Itrsquo;s all about managing yourself, and what you do with your time.
I hope you found the information in the podcast and in this short summary helpful. I'd love to hear your thoughts on any of the material we covered.

For now, I'm wishing...</itunes:summary>

<itunes:summary>If you are a coach or consultant, a large part of your success in helping clients depends on how well you understand how people's minds work.

The more you know about fields such as psychology and Neuro-linguistic Programming, the more effectively you can help businesses create more effective teams, make better recruitment decisions and improve their communications.

The problem sometimes is that this ability is seen as a 'soft' skill that potential clients find hard to evaluate.

That's why many successful coaches and consultants have added some form of psychometric testing to their toolkit and this increases their potential earning power dramatically.

With science and technology developing at an unprecedented pace, it's perhaps surprising that the most commonly used systems of psychometric testing have been around for so long and are often based on even older concepts.
Some of the most influential work in this field was done by Carl Jung in the 1920s and his ideas remain dominant today.
The widely-used Myers-Briggs instrument, for example, was directly built on Jung's ideas for understanding and assessing personality. It originated in the 1940s and it has since been used by millions of people around the world.

Another popular system widely used in business is DiSC, which is based on the theories of Dr. William Marston from the book Emotions of Normal People, published in 1928. Inscape Publishing expanded on these theories to create a commercial system.

The name comes from the fact that it rates people according to their degrees of Dominance, Influence, Steadiness and Compliance.

As the most common psychometric tests are based on concepts from the early 20th Century, it's not surprising that there has been demand for something more up to date.

In recent years, fields like Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) and applied cognitive psychology have added a great deal of new insight to understanding the human mind ndash; and of course, much has changed in the world of work.
The NLP field has contributed to the debate in various ways, including the concept of Metaprograms.
Our metaprograms are deeply unconscious perception filters and they explain why two people think, act and communicate differently in the same situation.

One of the drawbacks with metaprograms is that there have been various views about issues such as exactly how many metaprogram patterns there are and it has proved difficult to measure them in a robust and scientific way.

One approach that has worked well is the Language and Behavior Profile, which was created by Rodger Bailey and popularized by Shelle Rose Charvet through her book Words that Change Minds.

However, the LAB Profile relies heavily on observing and listening to people answering a series of questions so the ability to use it on a large scale is limited.

I've recently come across one approach that seems to address the need to combine the depth of information available from metaprograms with more scientific validity and the ability to be used with large groups of people.

This tool is known as the inventory for Work Attitudes and Motivations or iWAM for short.

It was developed by Patrick Merlevede, a Belgian cognitive scientist and management consultant and author of 7 Steps to Emotional Intelligence.

It seeks to identify an individualrsquo;s preferences for work organization styles, primary areas of interest and motivations and attitudes at work, through the 48 primary metaprograms.

I found out more about iWAM, and how it can be used in business, from David Klaasen of UK consultancy Inspired Working.

David is running a seminar about iWAM in the UK to explain to coaches and consultants how they can benefit from using this approach in their businesses.

One of the key benefits is that it focuses on results in a specific context and at a set moment in time so is ideal as a before/after test for the effectiveness of a change program, for example.

<itunes:summary>Have you ever wanted to accomplish something but been unsure how to get started? Or maybe you set a goal and then couldn't figure out the right actions to take?

Sometimes getting to where you want to be is just like trying to find your way out of a very large maze.

You know where you are, and you know where you want to be, but the area between is shrouded in mystery and even fear.

Sure you can ask someone else to show you the way but you are likely to get much better results if you develop your own focused, targeted and personalized map that will lead where you want to go.

Here are the seven steps you need to follow in order to do that:

1: Specify the Objective
In order to achieve any goal, you have to first know exactly what you're aiming to achieve. Each goal you set should include information such as:

When: A date for the fulfillment of your goals.
What: The specific outcome you want.
Where: Location, if applicable, e.g. where you want to live or work.
How: You may have a preference as to how you want things to happen but this may not always be within your control.
Who: If your goals involve others, you'll want to highlight your expectations.
Why: Your reasons for wanting to achieve your goals focusing on what you want, rather than what you don't want.

2: Break it Down
Every large goal is comprised of smaller parts. Sometimes these smaller parts are different facets of a bigger goal, and sometimes they are simply measured increments toward it.

3: Identify Clear Action Steps
You need to think about the action steps that will move you toward the finish line.

Daily actions are usually small to moderate in scale but hold the power of duplication and accumulation.
Weekly actions may be a bit larger in scale, take a little longer to complete and may involve an element of risk. They may also help you face your fears and include things like releasing your creations to the public, or increasing your business marketing efforts. These bolder actions usually bring about bigger results.
Monthly actions are things you do to keep yourself on track, like evaluate your progress and readjust your plans if necessary. They can also include activities like networking, personal development and research.

4: Set a General Time-line for Completion
While setting a deadline can be incredibly motivating and keep you focused, it can also cause immense frustration if things don't move along at the pace you expect. So you need to set a deadline that is achievable.

5: Develop a 'Plan B'
As much as we'd like things to go according to plan, it doesn't always turn out like that. So having a 'Plan B' for every step of your journey can save a lot of time, not to mention frustration! Imagine the difference between feeling immobilized because your path is blocked, or calmly switching gears and moving to Plan B. It can make or break fulfillment of your goals.

6: Create the Right Mindset for Success
By now you should have a clear, detailed plan for achieving your goal. How could you fail with a plan like this? You couldn't . . . unless your own thoughts begin to work against you. There are three key things to keep in mind if you want to stay focused and motivated.

Commit to your goal: You must be willing to keep working toward what you want, no matter how difficult it may seem at times.
Take action: The most detailed and effective plan is worthless if you never put it into action.
Let go: Don't get mired in frustration about things you can't control. Detach from unrealistic expectations and instead keep your attention squarely on what you can control, which is your own actions.

7: Evaluate Your Progress
Evaluation can help keep you honest about your efforts, reveal holes in your plans and inspire you to keep going when you notice even moderate results happening.

Once you become comfortable with these steps, goal achievement will become a simple and pleasant experi</itunes:summary>
